Music and English language learners

Music, its a powerful thing. It makes us happy. It makes us sad. It motivates us in the morning and can lull us to sleep at night. Think of a song that brings memories to you. Is it from your childhood? Is it from a special day? Its the holidays and there is plenty of festive music to get you in the mood. In America, as a Christian nation and a very capitalist society the retailers aren’t missing a beat and hope these tunes will get you in the holiday spirit and have the desire to buy loads of gifts.

Music is cultural, and its a language. You may even enjoy a song that you don’t understand the words to. You love the rhythm, perhaps the mood it reflects.

Music can represent a period, holidays, your wedding, the war, Woodstock. Think about how powerful Woodstock was. What comes to mind? What words would you use to express Woodstock? How about the 1960s, freedom of expression, the hippie era, the flower child, heavy drug use.

Music is a bold expression and we all listen but do you actually hear the words or just the beat? Do you understand the words? Many songs contain slang or some create their own words. Do you get it?
