Films, language, and culture

by Renee Asenguah

Did you know you can increase your English language skills and your cultural understanding  by watching a film? Yes, in the comfort and security of your own home you can go on a virtual journey to another place and immerse in culture and language. Whats great about this is you can pick up words in more than one language.

For example, I just binged watched the whole season of Emily in Paris which by the way is outstanding, and its in English however, filmed and set in Paris so periodically there was communication in French as well. Being its a film you get the visual idea of whats being communicated. Its also a great cultural blast with wanders around Paris, the sites, the food, the music, a virtual transport temporarily to another place.

There are many films that can virtually transport you to another land. Other favorites are Julie and Julia, Under the Tuscan Sun, Letters to Juliett, and the Descendants

Speaking of the Descendants there is a book published as well. Its another great way to increase your English language skills and comprehension. Its based in Hawaii and yes its America but a culture in its own with a strong Japanese influence. Many films also have a book published. I encourage you to try this approach to learning. Compare and contrast how the book varies from the film. Either way it will definitely help with comprehension and vocabulary.

Let me know what you found, perhaps we can do a Webinar lesson and discuss.

Enjoy the journey. Travel virtually for now.
