Learning English with music

by Renee Asenguah

Music, its a powerful thing. It makes us happy. It makes us sad. It motivates us in the morning and can lull us to sleep at night. Think of a song that brings memories to you. Is it from your childhood? Perhaps your dad sang it in the shower everyday hahaha perhaps it was a bedtime lullaby. Perhaps it was the song from your first school dance. What about your wedding song? Hopefully you’re still happily ever after however, if its become a statistic what happens when you hear the song now? I bet its not a favorite and has changed your emotions to what they were before.

Music is cultural, and its language. You may even enjoy a song that you don’t understand the words to. You love the rhythm, perhaps the mood it reflects.

Music can represent a period, war, hardship, Woodstock. Think about how powerful Woodstock was. What comes to mind? How about the 1960s, freedom of expression, the hippie era, the flower child, heavy drug use.

How about UNICEF, Music is a bold expression and we all listen but do you actually hear the words or just the beat? Do you understand the words? Many songs contain slang or some create their own words. Do you get it?
