America, a cultural journey

by Renee Asenguah

Happy Summer everyone!!

I want to update you on exciting news. I’m going to start posting a cultural journey across America, the United States. Whats the first thing you think of when someone mentions the states? I can bet the answer is New York City or perhaps Los Angeles California. Theres so much more and all very different. In fact, to much for 1 post so I will have many.

I have posted on the popular state of New York (my home) from the famous city on the eastern seaboard to Niagara Falls in the northwest corner. In between there are many small towns, farm land, a wine region, many beautiful lakes including 2 major ones, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. More to say later.

As we pass by our nations capital and go south to Florida. A draw for immigrants for its tropical weather. Its key for farming. A great supplier of oranges and other citrus. There is more to Florida besides Disney and Miami’s fast life. Follow along and lets look at the people, the culture, the communities.

Before moving on to the midwest, lets note all the small states, small towns, and farm lands you could pass that are key to the American culture. For example, South Carolina which lead the civil war and the path to end slavery and Tennessee birthplace of country music.

In the midwest you have Texas to the south, one of the biggest states in the country for the land. The state is very diverse and one of our fastest growing in population as its a draw for affordable housing and tech companies. It sits at the border of Mexico so a strong influence to the culture. Farming and oil production is key here.

To the north you have famous Chicago Illinois. Did you know corn fields surround this city? The windy city as locals call it and holds true.

Last but not least there is the west coast. California is well know and very cultural. Arizona, the desert state as well as Nevada yet both have some mountains.

If you travel to the north there are many states that aren’t mentioned that sit at the Canadian border. Washington, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Montana, Idaho (potato country)  and more.

Stay tuned as I highlight and talk to locals and share their posts here. You will be pleasantly surprised to hear their stories and find all America is not the same.
