What does your city smell like?

by Renee Asenguah

Turning up to Lake Erie on this serene day as we approach Buffalo to head towards Niagara Falls the sweet aroma is in the air. What could it be? Aww yes, the smell of cheerios and the home of General Mills. A part of history here and one of the many. Plan some extra time and don’t overlook the queen city as it won’t disappoint.

The locals call the area Buffalo Niagara to include both cities, Buffalo and Niagara Falls. So many things to see and do and year round. Buffalo is on the rebound from the old steel mill days.

Here are the highlights from a local-

Mark Twain museum inside the downtown Library

Canalside- summer concerts & yoga or winter with an ice rink to include bikes for all and walkers for kids to learn ice skating. You have to try it in true Buffalo form :)) Also home to the Naval Park where you can visit some great vessels such as the USS Little Rock.

Pizza is a must and the craft breweries are many. That is worth a post of its own. Hydraulic Hearth will serve up a savory New York style pie and a great selection of beers. Try a flight for some variety.

Great food is endless here and also worth its own post. A trip to the area, would not be complete without an order of wings as it is their birthplace. Anchor Bar is the original but touristy, Duffs is on the spicy side. President Obama brought his motorcade there. The local favorite is Dwyers out in the Tonawandas by the Erie Canal and on your way to Niagara Falls. My favorite is the garlic parmesan.

This will leave you in a great place to drive Niagara River Rd into Niagara Falls and avoid the parkway. Its a beautiful ride along the Niagara River. But for now spend a couple days in Buffalo and enjoy the history, the sites and sounds and definitely the food.

I will continue to post some great places and must sees so please stay tuned.

Until next time….Enjoy your adventures and travel as a local!!
