Having a Meal with the Locals in Singapore!

Did you know that Singapore is one of the most expensive place in the world to live? The tiny city-state, located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, rapidly transformed from a third-world nation in the 1960s and 70s to become a modern metropolis. So how did Singapore achieve so much in such a short period of time? English as the global language led to Singapore making English compulsory in every school and making it the nation’s official first language, one of four. Thanks to these policies, Singapore connected Asia to the West, in turn leading to massive economic growth. The government saw it as the key for diplomacy, International business, and technology.

Now you may wonder what it costs to travel like a local in Singapore. Despite its label as an expensive city, there are many affordable places to visit in Singapore. In this blog post, I’ll share with you a place called the hawker center. A hawker center is an open-air complex with numerous food stalls which you can order food from.

Some popular hawker centers include Maxwell Food Centre, Tiong Bahru Food Centre and Old Airport Road Food Centre. These hawker centers offer a variety of local dishes. Some of my favorite dishes include chicken rice, laksa, fried kway teow, prawn noodles and carrot cake. These amazing local dishes will give you an authentic taste of traveling like a local in Singapore. Although many hawker stall owners speak Chinese as their main language, the vast majority are able to understand English. After years of playing their trade in their stalls, they have picked up the language from the younger generations who mainly speak English. So fret not, traveling in Singapore is easy if you can speak English. Best of all, these hawker centers sell for very affordable prices. Much less than the prices you’ll find at touristy areas!

Thanks G-Young for the details. I will definitely try the hawker center on my visit 🙂
