Books are a great past time for me. It is a great way to drift, to escape to another place all while in the comforts of your chair or in this case your kitchen. Asha Gomez is an excellent author and the way she presents her book My Two Souths is perfect. Yet its a cookbook however, its a journey through her life. She reflects on her home Kerala India and her travels to America and the south, Georgia in particular.
What I find great with the book is she marry’s the two cultures together. She finds favorite foods in her new homeland and with her fond memories of favorite foods from India she blends these 2 recipes to give them an interesting twist. Asha knows her spices well. She is excellent at showing how each spice has its way of speaking. Each dish has its own language. Food is definitely a cultural journey that can be had anywhere.
ESL students would you like to experience unique lessons with cooking? I’m using this book in a class now and my students love it. Please let me know if you would be interested in a sample lesson.
For my readers here who enjoy cultural journeys books are great when we have a pause between trips and this is may tempt you into a trip to India or Georgia, USA. Be prepared to become hungry while reading. A great way to learn about many new spices. Please comment with your favorite recipes. Here is the link for easy shopping-
