The 9th of May is a great day to find yourself in Russia if you want to travel as a local. They would welcome you to their celebration.
Victory Day (9th of May) is a national holiday in Russia. Victory Day marks the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War. 1945 became the end of the Great Patriotic War for the USSR. On May 9th many people in Izhevsk and all over Russia attend a military parade in the morning and also take part in the Immortal Regiment march. Veterans always wear their medals as they head to the parade. On this day I took my 2 years old daughter Polina to go for a walk near the Eternal light. Its important at this young age she experiences the sights, the sounds of this symbolic time. We bought flowers on our way to the Eternal light and placed them at the memorial to honor war victims. It’s tradition and most do it on Victory Day in Russia. People embrace the veterans in the streets by giving them flowers as well. After that we continue our walk to see various events. There are a few stages all over the town with street performances, and artists. They proudly dance and sing wartime songs, songs whose popularity helped to inspire the Soviet Union in its fight against Nazi Germany. While strolling the neighborhood and enjoying various shows people can try a pleasant variety of delicious local street food. You can see on the photo how a woman in a Udmurt traditional dress is loading perepechi to the oven. Perepechi is the oldest and a famous dish of Udmurt cuisine, It is small open pie with meat, mushroom or vegetable fillings, usually topped with a mixture of eggs and milk. Is your mouth watering? I’m hungry! Victory Day celebration ends with people watching fireworks. Its been a grand day.
