July 1st, Feria or summer holidays

by Renee Asenguah

Happy 1st of July!! What does summer mean to you? Or are you on the opposite side of the Ecuador and its winter time? Southern Hemisphere countries how do you celebrate? For many the beach is the destination. For America they are preparing for the 4th of July, Independence Day celebrations and Canada, their northern neighbors are celebrating their national day today, July 1st. I am from the border city of Buffalo NY so celebrations will go from the 1st through the 4th to celebrate both countries. Picnics, barbecues, and fireworks will be everywhere.

This is a great time to learn about other cultures and join in the celebrations. I am at my second home in Spain and their traditional Ferias are going on in various towns especially along the coast. We just attended the feria in Algeciras on our way to Morocco. Its a small port city in the south of Spain however, a major port between Europe and North Africa.

Lets talk Feria as Spain is serious about them. Businesses close early, classes are canceled, locals dress in their traditional clothes and celebrations are the focus and they go long into the night. Its a must to experience and a great way to meet the locals and do as they do by trying some local food and a beverage, or four 🙂 There are many casetas set up so choose one or more to visit. Some would call the casetas a tent or gazebo. They will have their own entertainment and some flamenco dancing. Wander around the feria, take photos and enjoy.

Happy Celebrating! Please comment on what you will do and how your country celebrates summer/winter or is it Christmas in July that I keep hearing about?
